Abstract:

Drug delivery through oral film is gaining popularity due to its advantages over traditional dosages, such as fast absorption, high bioavailability, and improved patient adherence to swallowing instructions for older adults and toddlers with difficulties. In comparison to fast-dispersing tablets, it dissolves in less saliva in the mouth cavity within a minute of contact, doesn't need to be chewed, and doesn't require water, increasing the efficacy of active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs). Many elderly and young patients avoid taking these solid preparations because they are afraid of choking. As a result, tablets that dissolve in the mouth have been created. However, there are difficulties with formulation, stability, and manufacturing, including problems with solubility and choosing the right medication properties. Oral Fast Dissolving Films (OFDFs) are divided into three categories, each with a distinct function: mucoadhesive melt-away wafers, flash-release wafers, and mucoadhesive sustained-release wafers. Plasticizers, water-soluble polymers, APIs, and other excipients are used in the formulation of OFDFs to guarantee stability and effectiveness. The review’s objectives aim to give a summary of those recently created oral films, going over their manufacturing processes, formulation strategies, benefits, and drawbacks. Brief conclusions and outlooks for the future are also included.
