Abstract:

Medicinal plants have long been appreciated for their extensive therapeutic potential, offering effective natural remedies for various health conditions, including liver cirrhosis and its associated complications. Herbal formulations have played a vital role in traditional medicine systems worldwide, providing solutions for preventing and managing hepatic damage and cognitive decline. In the present study, the pharmacological activity of Rumex hastatus root extract was evaluated, focusing on its effects in an experimental model of liver cirrhosis-induced hepatic and cognitive decline in albino rats. The research assessed critical parameters such as liver function biomarkers (ALT, AST, and bilirubin levels), oxidative stress markers, pro-inflammatory cytokines, and cognitive performance, alongside histopathological changes in hepatic and brain tissues. The results indicate that Rumex hastatus root extract significantly ameliorates hepatic damage by reducing oxidative stress, modulating inflammatory pathways, and preserving liver architecture. Furthermore, the extract improves cognitive function by mitigating neuroinflammation and oxidative damage in brain tissues. These findings underscore the potential of Rumex hastatus as a natural therapeutic agent for managing liver cirrhosis and its neurological complications, providing a safer and more effective alternative to conventional treatments. Further studies are recommended to explore its bioactive constituents, broader pharmacological activities, and mechanisms of action to establish its clinical relevance in liver and brain health management.
