Proniosomes offer a novel drug delivery system wherein drugs are enclosed within vesicles comprising a bilayer of non-ionic surfactant, typically falling within the sub-micron size range, presenting a promising solution for overcoming barriers associated with drug delivery via various routes. These carriers, distinguished by their stability both during application and storage, are prepared through diverse techniques, offering advantages over conventional vesicular carriers. An in-depth comprehension of proniosome structure and function can pave the way for the rational design of targeted drug formulations. This review provides an overview of preparation methods, evaluation techniques, and the practicality of proniosomes in targeted drug delivery, while also shedding light on recent advancements and future prospects in the field.
